Buda Receives $10.5 Million in Federal Funding for East Main Street Expansion

A major road improvement project is one step closer to becoming a reality in Buda. The City of Buda has announced it has been awarded $10.48 million in federal transportation funding through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) to help reconstruct East Main Street between IH-35 and Firecracker Drive. With the City's required local match of $2.62 million, the project carries a total price tag of $13.1 million. Funding is expected to become available in 2029. East Main Street has become one of Buda's busiest corridors as the city continues to grow. The current roadway includes one lane in each direction with a center turn lane, and traffic congestion has become a common concern for residents and commuters. Plans call for widening the roadway to four lanes with a raised median, dedicated left-turn lanes, and 10-foot shared-use paths on both sides of the street for pedestrians and cyclists. The project will also include upgrades to stormwater infrastructure and water quality improvements. The expansion is expected to improve traffic flow between IH-35 and Firecracker Drive while providing better access for residents, businesses, schools, and the growing Sunfield community, which includes more than 5,800 planned homes east of Firecracker Drive. The Sunfield developer is also expected to widen East Main Street farther east beyond Firecracker Drive. This funding was awarded through CAMPO's competitive regional project selection process, which distributes federal transportation dollars across the Austin metropolitan area. While construction is still several years away, the City has already completed an interim improvement by adding a dedicated right-turn lane from westbound Main Street onto the northbound IH-35 frontage road, a project that wrapped up in April 2025.
